Buffet or bowl food: which suits your event
Both feed a standing room. They behave very differently, and the wrong choice is the usual reason an event feels slow or cramped.
Buffet
- Best for: 30 guests and up, where people can sit or lean, and the schedule has a clear 45-minute food window.
- Space: needs a service table run and a queue route. Allow two serving lines per 60 guests or the queue becomes the event.
- Cost: finger buffet from GBP 34 per head, fork buffet from GBP 48 per head.
- Watch out for: queueing, cross-contamination risk at shared service, and guests taking too much early on.
Bowl food
- Best for: networking, receptions and launches where nobody sits and conversation matters more than the meal.
- Space: no service run needed – staff circulate, so the floor plan stays open.
- Cost: from GBP 42 per head, typically three to four bowls per guest.
- Watch out for: it needs more service staff, roughly one per 25 guests, and a place for guests to put empties.
Quick rule
If you want people to eat properly, buffet. If you want people to keep talking, bowl food. For a two-hour reception that replaces dinner, a mix of canapes then two bowls works best.
